james caan resizeEx-Dragon’s Den entrepreneur James Caan asserts that his new guide to breaking into business will teach you “how to become your own Dragon”. With five-star reviews for his advice on taking the fast lane to success, we asked him to share his favourite motivational tips from ‘Start Your Business in 7 Days’.

Do you have what it takes?

Before you set out on the journey of starting your own business, ask yourself as honestly as you can whether or not you possess the DNA of an entrepreneur: do you have the inner blend of determination, hunger and fearlessness that you will need to succeed?

Play to your strengths

Do you prefer working indoors or outdoors, alone or in a team, early in the morning or late at night, standing up or sitting down? Understanding those preferences – alongside your career experience – will define the idea you will feel passionate about.

Admit if it’s not working

Your first idea does not have to be your final idea. Be strong enough to say ‘I’m out’ early on and move on to another idea that might be the one that works. You will save yourself so much time, money and stress.

Share your ideas

Tell as many people as you can. Ask for feedback and you’ll be amazed what you can learn. Somebody will give you a piece of advice or the one angle you hadn’t thought of that could make all the difference between success and failure.

Do your homework

Research is absolutely fundamental to your ability to succeed. The information and knowledge you can acquire – from personal observation, detailed online research, going to networking events and talking to other people who are already in your business sector – is not just useful to know. It is critical to know.
