Mission

The mission of the Lamar MBA program is to deliver a dynamic integrated management education to a variety of student groups. Our students range from those who are exploring their career goals, through students who want to advance their existing business knowledge, and to students who have a focused career path. These different student needs are met through either the flexible part-time or the full-time Lamar MBA.

 

The Lamar MBA places a heavy emphasis on an experiential-based approach to problem solving including the knowledge, skill and ability to incorporate ethical considerations, leadership, teamwork, and a global perspective into the decision-making process. At Lamar University, we blend our student"s MBA education with four key ingredients: passionate teaching, active learning, specialized knowledge and professional development to enhance their career potential.

 

Objectives

When students complete the MBA program they should be able to:

  • Demonstrate managerial understanding of business disciplines.
  • Integrate the functional areas in the analysis of strategic management issues.
  • Incorporate ethical considerations in decision making.
  • Incorporate global perspectives in decision making.
  • Work in team-based environment that emphasizes skills including leadership, group problem solving, and consensus building.
  • Enhance effective decision making with information technology.

Through effective teaching and interactive course assignments, students become professional managers capable of innovative problem solving, decision making and leadership. Candidates study core subjects such as financial accounting in an economic context, financial statements, global perspectives and cultural sensitivities in the management of an organization, strategic planning in the marketing process, financial management, environment of business, quantitative analysis and strategic management.

 

MBA Highlights

The Lamar University MBA program is one of approximately 250 masters programs accredited by AACSB-International among the 700 U.S. universities now offering a Masters degree in Business Administration. Students with degrees in non-business fields as well as business undergraduates are encouraged to earn the Master of Business Administration Degree.

 

Recently, the Princeton Review, included Lamar University"s MBA program in its "Best 143 Business Schools" 2006 Edition. The Review bases inclusion in the book on student opinions.

 

New Concentrations

The MBA program now offers concentrations and will extend and refine the student"s knowledge of business through study, experiential exercises, and assessment of performance in the areas listed under the graduate program objectives.

Entrance Requirements

You must meet the general university requirements for admission. In addition, you must take the GMAT and your undergraduate grade point average and GMAT scores must equal or exceed the minimum standards. You must meet at least one of the following standards:

  • A total of at least 950 points based on the formula: 200 times the overall undergraduate GPA for the first baccalaureate degree (4.0 system) plus the GMAT score*.
  • A total of at least 1,000 points based on the formula: 200 times the GPA (4.0 system) of the last 60 hours of undergraduate work for the first baccalaureate degree plus GMAT scores*.

*Note: Students must make a minimum score of 450 on the GMAT for unconditional acceptance regardless of GPA. Students who make 400-450 on the GMAT and meet either standard above will be admitted conditionally pending satisfactory completion of nine hours with a "B" (3.0) average. A student who makes less than 400 on the GMAT will not be admitted regardless of GPA.

 

A student whose native language is not English is expected to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and score more than 525 on the paper based test or 197 on the computer based test.

 

GPA x 200 + GMAT = 1150 or higher to be scholarship eligible.

 

Post Baccalaureate or Post Graduate students are not permitted to enroll in business courses for graduate credit without prior consent of the Associate Dean.

Tuition and Fees:

Approximately $3,764 per year for in-state students and $9,284 per year for out-of-state students. Housing on campus is about $5,600 for room and board. Off-campus housing is also available.

 

Scholarships/funding available:

GPA x 200 + GMAT = 1150 or higher to be scholarship eligible. Financial assistance is available to all LU students in the form of federal loans, scholarships and grants.

 

Starting dates:

Fall (end August), Spring (middle January), Summer (beginning June)

Domestic applications must be received 30 days before Fall, Spring, or Summer registration. International applications April 15 (Fall), September 1 (Spring), January 15 (Summer).

Student Profile:

Student Michelle Bryan

Michelle Bryan has been a Marketing / Sales manager for two years, while attending Lamar University full time to pursue a Marketing degree, and subsequently, her MBA. Upon graduation from the MBA program, she plans to pursue a career at a major marketing firm in the Houston area.

 

The MBA program at Lamar University is very attractive for graduate students, both business and non-business majors, who wish to further their education and gain valuable insight into the world of business. Relatively small class sizes allow for close relationships with professors and administrators, and give students the opportunity to interact on a more personal basis with their instructors. The workload is very challenging, but highly rewarding. The majority of graduate students at Lamar work and attend school full time, but most find that, with hard work and dedication, they are able to handle the workload.

 

Although I initially chose Lamar for its location, it has proven to be far more valuable than I ever imagined. I have gained a great amount of knowledge, as well as how to apply that knowledge in business situations. The coursework has been very challenging, but the challenges have not come without great rewards. Lamar has given me the opportunity to achieve greater success than I ever thought possible. I would recommend a Lamar MBA to anyone looking to expand their knowledge of the business world. Was it worth it to continue my studies at Lamar University? Absolutely; I could not have asked for a better experience.
