University of Portsmouth

The University of Portsmouth aims to give students an excellent experience focused on knowledge and skills essential for roles in the global workplace. Our graduates have gained attributes beyond their degrees and that is recognised by employers.

Real-life learning experiences
At the University our students put theory into practice to gain valuable professional skills and increase their employability in the competitive graduate careers market. We not only teach you but also let you experience life in your chosen profession. Law students take part in mock trials in our on-campus courtroom; criminology students analyse scenes of crime in our Forensic House; pharmacy students dispense medication in our dispensary; journalism students produce newspapers in our newsroom; and finance students practise trading in our Bloomberg suite.

Spinnaker TowerStudy a professionally accredited course
Employers are looking for more than just academic qualifications – they need to know that you have the skills and knowledge to enter the workplace. Around half of our students are on courses which lead to professional accreditation and gain additional industry-recognised qualifications.

The University offers undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees across a wide range of disciplines. The courses are structured to extend knowledge and broaden the skills of the students. Members of the academic staff are international experts in their fields.

Learn from internationally-recognised researchers
Research at Portsmouth was rated 'world class' in the latest survey of research quality in UK universities (RAE 2008). Three subject areas – Applied Mathematics, Allied Health Professions and Studies, and European Studies – were judged to be among the top research groups in their subject areas in the UK. In Applied Mathematics, Portsmouth was equal first with Cambridge, Durham and Oxford, with the highest total (75 per cent) for research that is 'internationally excellent and world-leading'.

Learning spaces
Our students highly rate their learning environment. Recent investment ensures that our classrooms, lecture theatres and laboratories are of the highest standards with state-of-the-art facilities. The fully wireless campus and remote library access allow students to study anywhere both on and off campus, maximising opportunities for learning.

Personal support
We don't simply provide classes, lectures and tutorials. We enhance your experience by assisting with your arrival, orientation, housing, finance, English language, study skills, visa renewals, personal welfare, IT support, academic tutoring, foreign language learning, social integration, special needs, part-time employment and career counselling. All of these optional services are free of charge to international students and largely available on a one-to one basis.

Spinnaker TowerLocation
Portsmouth is a lively and cosmopolitan city on the south coast of England and it enjoys some of the best weather in the UK. It is an interesting and attractive place where the historic sits comfortably with the modern. The city is compact – everything you could possibly need is within easy reach.

Just 90 minutes by direct train from the centre of London, Portsmouth is also within easy reach of Heathrow, Gatwick and Southampton airports. As a busy ferry port, it is a gateway to the continent with regular sailings to France and Spain.

Accommodation
The University has ten modern and well-equipped halls of residence. All rooms are single occupancy and most have a private bathroom. All new international (non-EU) students are guaranteed a room in University accommodation for their first year at the University (conditions apply).
