Studying an MBA in Australia is a popular option with many international business people. Factors such as the excellent facilities on offer, wide range of electives and specialist courses and the opportunities offered by Australian businesses and proximity to Asia all make Australia a destination you should consider for your international MBA program.

What international MBA programs are offered in Australia?

Australia has a vast variety of MBA programs and specialisations, from executive MBAs to part-time programs and distance learning. You should expect your international MBA program in Australia to take between 12-24 months to complete full time. Some part-time programs can take up to three years to complete.

You should expect your MBA program in Australia to have links to business, with many programs building in a period working with an Australian business.

Immigration and visas in Australia

In order to take an international MBA program in Australia, you will need to acquire a temporary visa. This visa will allow you to study at an Australian institution and work unlimited hours whilst completing your business course, and will also allow dependent family members to accompany you whilst you are in the country.

In order to obtain your student visa you will need to pay a visa charge at your nearest Australian Embassy, where you will also have to present:

  • A completed form 157A
  • The confirmation letter from the university where you will be studying
  • Four recent passport sized photographs
  • Copies of passport pages
  • Evidence that you have Overseas Student Health Cover for as long as you will be in the country

You can apply online for your visa via the Australian Government’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship website.

What are the costs of studying for an MBA in Australia?

MBA tuition fees in Australia vary depending on the course and institution you choose to study at. However, as a guide you should expect an average MBA program in Australia to cost between AUS$18,000-70,000 per year.

However, this cost is offset by an average salary increase of 31% for graduates in the first year after completing their business course.

Working in Australia

Although there is no guarantee that this will be the case, if you intend to live and work in Australia when you graduate from your MBA course you should start looking for roles while studying.

The Australian government regularly publishes a Skilled Occupations List (SOL), which features jobs that are of medium to high demand in the country. These are the jobs that are of the most value to the Australian economy, and if you are skilled in one of these areas you are much more likely to be granted permission to work in the country. The extensive list can be found on the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship website.
