The service-oriented "can do"
culture, the practical focus on value for money
spent, and the abundance of people, technology,
natural and financial resources allow the innovative
American business community to thrive. As an awesome
competitor and leader in business activities around
the world, the United States values and provides
a well-developed system of education for business.
What prospective or practicing businessperson
couldn't benefit significantly from exposure to
the American way of business through a world-class
business education in the United States?
The long answer to the question is more complex
since there are many compelling reasons why obtaining
business education in the United States makes
good sense. A few reasons are highlighted in the
following paragraphs.
Business Education System with Options for Everyone
The United States has a system of business education
with opportunities for everyone. Anyone who graduates
from secondary school or the equivalent can pursue
higher education in one form or another. There
are countless opportunities for people who want
to study business-and related subjects-at more
than 4,000 educational institutions beyond the
secondary school level. Many of these opportunities
are likely to be appropriate for you.
Students can study business to the extent of
their interest and abilities in the United States.
Educational programs at various types of business
schools accept students with whatever business-related
backgrounds they possess, then build upon those
backgrounds. The educational system for business
is designed with many options for entrance and
exit, allowing students considerable flexibility
while pursuing business studies.
Widespread Availability of Quality Business Education
High-quality business education is widely available
throughout each of the 50 states. While such prestigious
educational institutions as Harvard and Stanford
are well known around the world for their business
education programs, almost any American educational
institution can provide you with a quality business
education. Many state-funded educational institutions,
whether large or small, whether in urban and rural
settings, offer good value in business education
for the money spent. A noteworthy bonus is the
fact that business degrees from the United States
are highly respected and valued around the world.
Three basic types of institutions deliver education
for business in the United States, at least one
of which is right for you. Business and technical
schools offer intensive programs from one to two
years in length that focus on quickly preparing
students for employment in business occupations.
Junior and community colleges offer primarily
two-year associate's degree programs that focus
around business-related study leading to either
employment or more education. Colleges and universities
offer primarily four-year bachelor's degrees in
a wide variety of business-related fields. These
degrees include a broadening liberal arts component
involving study in the humanities, mathematics,
and social and natural sciences combined with
a more narrow professional focus on a variety
of business subjects. Bachelor's degree business
programs are designed to prepare well-educated
people who are able to function effectively in
the complex business world. Many American colleges
and universities also offer Master's and doctoral
degrees for those wanting highly specialized business
education.
Business Program Structures
with Flexibility
The American system of education, especially its
business education component, prides itself on
its flexible program structures that meet student
needs. Business education is organized around
modules called courses, each of which lasts one
semester (about 15 weeks) or one quarter (about
10 weeks). A student typically enrolls in four
to six courses at a time. There are either two
semesters or three quarters in the regular nine-month
academic school year-plus an option for summer
school courses, making efficient year-round business
study possible. Some schools even reduce their
fees for international students during summer
school sessions.
Employed students can study full-time or part-time.
Courses are offered during days, evenings and
occasionally on weekends to accommodate students'
schedules. Increasingly, education for business
includes internships or other forms of cooperative
education, giving students the chance to apply
what they are learning in the classroom in the
real business world. This practical firsthand
experience helps students to bridge the gap between
school and work, and it makes students better
qualified workers when they seek jobs. Business-related
professional organizations also complement classroom
business education, allowing students opportunities
to assume leadership roles, to function in teams,
to accomplish goals and to interact with business
professionals.
Many Business Fields from
Which to Choose
Because the American culture values the many contributions
of its business community to national life, its
educational system makes many fields of business
available for study. Students can focus their
business studies on such common fields as accounting,
business administration, economics, finance, general
business, human resource management, international
business, management, management information systems,
marketing and production/operations management.
Other less common fields of business study include
business communication, business and technology
education, marketing education, and training and
development.
The business education for these fields usually
has three components beyond the liberal arts component:
core, major and emphasis or specialization requirements.
Core courses ensure that all business students
are broadly exposed to the foundation elements
of business. Major courses ensure that all business
students focus their education on at least one
main field of business. Emphasis or specialization
requirements ensure that all business students
receive in-depth education about at least one
specialized aspect of business. The result of
these requirements is thoroughly prepared businesspersons
ready for the challenges ahead.
Learning in an Accepting
Culture
Business education in the United States occurs
in an accepting cultural environment with friendly,
outgoing people. The United States is well known
for its culturally diverse population that is
readily assimilated into the American way of life.
Business schools are no different, with most having
students from countries around the world to enrich
the institutional ethnic mix. In fact, more than
500,000 international students, many of them business
students, choose to enroll in the American higher
education system each year.
Since providing education for business is big
business in the United States, schools are well
prepared to meet the needs of international students.
For example, most offer a wide variety of support
services, such as intensive English programs,
cultural awareness and orientation programs, and
academic, immigration and personal counseling,
to help international students adapt to life and
to school in the United States.
Many international students enjoy the fact that
in America they have the freedom to be what they
want to be, to do what they want to do within
reasonable limits, and to experience firsthand
all that makes the United States diverse, interesting
and appealing. This accepting culture nurtures
the American business community, and it can nurture
you as you pursue an American business education.
