A professional MBA is similar to an executive MBA in purpose and structure, but the level of student it is aimed at differs. A professional MBA (PMBA) is normally a part-time degree program aimed at business students who want to continue working while studying.

However, unlike executive MBA which are aimed at high-level professionals with several years of senior management experience, a professional MBA is aimed at mid-level professionals who are looking to gain extra experience and knowledge. 

What will I study on a professional MBA program?

A professional MBA program will focus on improving your technical business and management skills. You may choose to focus on a particular elective such as finance or accounting, as most professional MBA courses aim to develop your excellence in a particular field rather than improving your general skills.

Length and structure

As almost all professional MBA programs are part time, you should expect your course to take between 13-24 months to complete, depending on where you choose to study.

Most course providers understand that mid-level professionals will be busy during the working day, so schedule classes and seminars for weeknights or weekends. Some courses will also offer you the opportunity to study online, taking part in video seminars and forum discussions.

You should expect assessment to be via a combined final project, exams and seminar markings.

Entry requirements

A professional MBA program is more about potential than experience, so you will generally find a less restrictive set of entry requirements than on other programs. Business schools will look for academic merit, so expect to show your previous undergraduate qualification and any professional qualifications.

You will also have to have a good GMAT score, as well as some work experience in industry.
